“I want the money; money and the cars, cars and the clothes…I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful.”
It’s easy to get wrapped up in it. The subliminal and direct messages we get from our culture create an obsession with what we should strive for. I’ll happily sing along to the song quoted above by Drake and Trey Songz thinking nothing of it. Their song “Successful” is only the tip of the expectational iceberg of success.
The money. The cars. The clothes. The houses. The vacations. The status. The power. The titles.
“I’m the Chief Innovation Officer of an up and coming start-up.”
What’s that now?
It’s a dog-eat-dog world, or so they say. But what if we stopped and took a good look at the system around us? What if we stopped trying to keep up with the Joneses and decided to be content with the (insert your last name here)s?
There’s nothing wrong with being driven, but why not pick your own target to aim that drive at? So many of us settle for the generic, played out form of success and spend our lives trying to capture it.
What does success look like to you? It doesn’t have to be a big house, a sports car, and a 6-figure job. It could be a stay at home dad that knows getting his kids up and out of the house for school is a huge win. It could be a well-liked teacher that knows she is the biggest role model in some of her kids lives. It could be a waiter or waitress who spends every waking moment outside of the restaurant dedicated to honing their craft of singing, writing, or painting.
But it could still be a big house, a sports car, and a 6-figure job. And that’s just fine. As long as it’s the picture of success that you chose. Maybe you want to make a lot of money so you can give back in a big way. Maybe you want a big house to fill with a big family.
What you want out of life is just that: what you want. Make sure that it’s a conscious decision that you’ve made. Forget the images on TV and the flashy pictures on Instagram. It’s all a facade that most of gleefully accept.
Think about what you want, what would make you happy, and write it down in ink. Then spend every day moving in that direction with intention.
I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful…
