The Hamster Wheel: It’s Time to Hop Off
Your eyes won’t stay shut.
You’re physically still, but your mind is running laps.
You lay wide awake and wonder, “How the hell did I get here?”
Are you having trouble finding an answer?
Here’s why the answers aren’t coming as quickly as you’d like: you already know how you got to where you are. You’ve been walking that path since you were a kid. You went to school, got decent grades, played by the rules, and did what was asked of you. After 4 years of study (read: drinking) at college, you managed to make it through and graduate with honors.
You knew where you were going. Someone–a parent, a teacher, a mentor–made it a well lit path for you a while back. Sure, there may have been setbacks and roadblocks that tried to throw you off course, but you’ve known all along where you were going and how to get there.
But now you’re not a huge fan of where you’ve landed. So, it’s not so much that you’re having trouble finding answers, your inquiry is just a bit off.
Wrong question: “How the hell did I get here?”
Right question: “How the hell, and more importantly why the hell, am I still here?”
Answer: You got caught in the human hamster wheel.
You’ve been going about your business and doing what’s asked of you for so long, that you don’t know any other way.
You haven’t stopped to assess your daily tasks and if you’re enjoying them for years.
You are still where you are because this hamster wheel has you working your ass off while staying in place.
Step off the hamster wheel. Step out of your norm. Find a place to run that doesn’t bring you back to where you are.
You have more potential you could imagine if you would just believe it were possible.
Cultivate new habits that will break your old patterns.
Study something new every day to break you out of your comfort zone.
Challenge yourself to learn new skills.
Nobody forces a hamster to stay on it’s wheel, and no one is forcing you to stay on yours.
Choose to step off.
Choose a new path.
Your current reality is a box you don’t fit in anymore. It’s time to break out.
