“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” -Laozi
“And suddenly you know: it’s time to try something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” -Meister Eckhart
“Courage doesn’t happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life.” -Shannon L. Adler
To paraphrase the wise and knowing Michael Scott, the most important part of a blog post is the opening line. When time is not a factor, I like to try out a few different ones.
The truth is, we don’t know where to start with this. What we’re aiming to do is share our journey through flexible dieting. Just as you may have stumbled upon this post because you were looking for advice or some information about Macros (Macronutrients), flexible dieting, or #IIFYM in an effort to begin your healthy lifestyle journey, we are just beginning in our efforts to share our story and information that we have found to be helpful as we began our healthy lifestyle (so essentially, bare with us).
Who we are
We are a couple that met a few years back. At the time we were living in different cities and met by chance at a bar. We made a long distance relationship work for roughly a year before I (Mr. Macro speaking) moved to my lady’s city. The long distance part was hard, but it was all worth it. We found time to make it work because it meant something to us (the same can be said about this whole healthy lifestyle thing. If you want it and it means something to you, you’re going to have to work for it. Set your priorities and make it happen). We got engaged shortly after my move and got married about a year later, just this past October.
My beautiful wife and I on our big day. I can imagine the conversation from this picture going something like this…
“You look amazing darling”
“Thank you love, now let’s go stuff. our. faces.”
The wedding was amazing for many reasons, but one reason that applies to this blog specifically is that it can be seen as a catalyst to how we got to where we are today with our healthy lifestyle..
How we got here
During the year leading up to our wedding, we both tried to diet and exercise (as most couples do before their big day). After a year of dieting though, when the big day came we were ready to chow down. The food was amazing at the wedding; stations of Asian food, Italian food and Mexican food. We ate everything. Then after the wedding, we felt that we were entitled to continue indulging because we had worked so hard to look great at the wedding. Pasta, wine, take out, eat in. We did it all. We washed away all of our progress. As the new year rolled around, it was time that we kicked it back in gear and found a more permanent healthy lifestyle rather than just a diet that would get us to a certain weight.
Look, we don’t claim to be experts on this stuff, but flexible dieting has opened up our eyes to a way of eating that can TRULY be sustainable. Face it, chicken and rice everyday is not going to cut it for the rest of your life. You like hamburgers? Great, we got you covered (I had a McDouble yesterday. It was amazing). You like pop tarts? Wonderful, we have them daily. It’s not all fun and games, we do also balance those with healthy, nutrient dense food throughout the day. BUT we don’t have fish and quinoa EVERY SINGLE MEAL. We switch it up and enjoy what we eat.
Essentially it goes like this: the three macronutrients (or Macros) are Fat, Protein and Carbs. Each one has a certain amount of calories associated with it per gram:
Fat: 1 gram of fat=9 calories
Protein: 1 gram of protein=4 calories
Carbohydrates: 1 gram of carbs=4 calories
By using these to calculate and balance your calorie intake, you can really have some treats here and there and stay on track for your goals.
Here is a link to an article that started it all for us, and we hope it does the same for you:
It lays out what Macros are and how to calculate yours. Trust us, this is an amazing thing once you wrap your head around it. It may be tough in the beginning, but as with anything in life that is worth working for (and if you don’t think your health and wellness is one of them, I’m sorry to hear that) it’s not always going to be easy.
We look forward to sharing this experience with you. We are not huge bodybuilders that have already reached our goals. We, like you, are still on our journey to what we want. We respect the hell out of the Instagram fitness people who are shredded, and maybe that one day that will be us. But for now, we are just a normal couple using some knowledge of #IIFYM to get in shape and enjoy every minute of it!
