I posted a couple weeks back about a new project that I am embarking on this school year (NEW PROJECT: Mr. Matiash Goes Running. Episode 01.). Throughout the course of the year I will be training to run a half-marathon and vlogging my journey to showcase to my students that while they are working hard in the classroom, I will be busting my ass outside of it.
Check out the latest episode of the vlog here: Mr. Matiash Goes Running. Episode 02.
Based on Carol Dweck’s work in Mindset (Book Review: Mindset by Carol Dweck), I’m really trying to emphasize and celebrate the work being put in, rather than my results I get out. Results are great and everything, but only from the practice and training are the results are a possibility. For my students, that practice and training are the hard work they put into studying and doing homework. The more focus they have on that (instead of the lofty A+ test or exam grade), the more successful and rewarding they will find the process.
This particular update comes after I ran 4 miles at a rate of about 10 min/mile. Not bad for a guy that was not a fan of running in the past. I look forward to looking back at 4 miles and feeling like that was just a warmup!
